Frequently asked questions

Will this service from STEPS cost me anything?

STEPS’ services to job seekers are free. That’s because STEPS is funded by the Federal Government as part of the Disability Employment Network to assist people with a disability find employment.

How do I know if I’m eligible to receive assistance from STEPS?

The easiest way to find out if we can assist you is to visit one of our branches or
ring 1-300-078 377.

Generally, to qualify for assistance, clients need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be over 15 years of age
  • Have a disability (as defined by the Disability Services Act)
  • Be able and willing to work a minimum of eight hours per week

Where possible, STEPS representatives will refer you to another service if it more closely suits your needs.

What type of job would I except to find through STEPS?
Our employment consultants will attempt to find you employment that best suits your skills, strengths and needs. Our service is about helping you to reach your potential, so we start by finding out about you first.

How long will it take STEPS to find me a job?

There’s plenty to consider before answering this question, but be assured that we’ll do our best. The quickest and best results come when STEPS and the jobseeker work together as a team in the search for employment.

The time taken can depend on how your skills and preferred area of work matches where you live. For example, some areas have lots of jobs in retail, but limited opportunity in information technology.

It can also depend on timing, and whether there is a high demand for a job type at a particular time. And sometimes, we may advise you to access training first if it leads to improved job prospects.

What’s the difference between STEPS and other employment agencies?

The support STEPS gives you after you start work is the big difference. To make sure you feel comfortable with your new job, STEPS can arrange work trials and on the job support. STEPS Employment Consultants will work with you until you master tasks and feel confident.

What if I lose the job STEPS finds me, or am not suited?

We understand that today’s job market is very dynamic. New businesses come and go. Entire industries have highs and lows. Sometimes you may not be suited to a role that initially looked like a good match.

If things don’t work at one job, you’re not alone. STEPS will work with you, going all the way back to the start of the job search process if necessary. Just because one job doesn’t work out, doesn’t mean the next one will follow suit. Your next job could be your most enjoyable.
