STEPS Disability Qld Inc is committed to upholding the legal and human rights of people with a disability. STEPS will take all practical and appropriate steps to prevent abuse and neglect of Participants.
What is abuse?
To abuse someone is to harm or hurt them in some way or violate their human or civil rights. This may include but not limited to:
- Punching, hitting, slapping, burning;
- Forcing you to take part in a sexual activity against your will;
- Threatening, harassing or intimidating you;
- Wrongful use of your money or assets or stopping you from using your own money or assets.
If you have been assaulted or attacked this is an offence and needs to be reported to the police immediately. The police can contacted by calling “000”.
What is neglect?
Someone is neglected when services are withheld and this causes you harm.
For example:
- Denying assistance which exposes you to physical, mental or emotional harm;
- Restricting the social, intellectual and emotional growth or well being of a person.
These behaviours are unacceptable by either:
- STEPS staff or
- You, the participant.
STEPS will not tolerate any of the above behaviors. Any complaints received will be investigated and appropriate action taken.
What to do if someone at STEPS has not treated you properly.
If you feel you have not been treated properly by a staff member at STEPS, follow the grievance procedure and:
- Approach the person and explain the behaviour you found offensive, you are welcome to bring an advocate, friend or family member with you to assist. DO NOT approach the person if you fear them, or they attacked or assaulted you.
